Resident Evil 4 Four Quatro
First Impressions
When the trailer first came out, we already knew that it was going to be different from Resident Evil 3 Remake. I got excited, and the first time I played, I knew it was something dope, something legit, and a game worthy of my time.

Story
When it comes to story, you don’t have to worry about anything being chopped up like Resident Evil 3 Remake was. This game keeps the same story as its original counterpart, meaning that only a few things change—especially when it comes to Ada’s storyline.
The story is: the president’s daughter gets kidnapped. Nobody knows how, but they receive intel that she is in a fucking village in the middle of nowhere, and the president makes the best decision ever—send one guy, a single guy, to deal with the situation and bring his daughter Ashley back home.
The game starts with Leon reaching the location where the intel showed as Ashley’s last known location. You have the support of Hunnigan, and that’s it.
You explore more and more of the village, find Ashley in a church, meet Luis, then Ada. Reminiscent times. Amidst this chaos, you have to deal with a lot of people infected with Las Plagas, mutants, and the leaders of the region. You must find a cure for Ashley and so on, until the end.
Characters

It starts with Leon narrating his past and what happened in Raccoon City. At first glance, you don’t believe that a single ex-cop could handle this entire situation on his own. The character shows experience and develops a stronger link with you.
While Leon is the serious guy in the game, there’s also Luis, a mysterious guy who disappears every now and then, gives vague answers to Leon’s questions, and, further down the road, starts to help Leon and Ashley without them knowing why. In the meantime, while trying to help them, he is completely screwed because Ada needs something from him—a specimen of Las Plagas that Luis keeps, since he worked for Los Iluminados before having a change of heart.
Ada is more amazing than ever. Every time she appears on the screen, your eyes can’t focus on anything else. She has her own DLC, her own motivations, and objectives.
You can see that Leon is not the same guy from Raccoon City—he has developed a lot of experience, and the sync between him and the player is very nice. Leon is a pretty cool character, probably my favorite protagonist in all games. I thought Resident Evil 3 Remake would change that, but it didn’t. Luis is more developed in the remake, which makes him a good character—I liked Luis. Still talking about the characters, Ashley is way less annoying than her original counterpart. The command for her to stay back and follow you works well, she looks amazing, and is the fusion of three supermodels, so it couldn’t go wrong. Ada is amazing, playing as her is amazing, and she has a fucking grappling hook and uses it better than Batman. She is a super spy, looks beautiful, and her interactions with Luis, losing her patience with him, and the mysterious interactions with Leon define her character well.
Gameplay
Like I mentioned before, the gameplay is peak third-person action. I can’t picture it being better than it is in this game—the combat feels great, exploration feels great, and it works pretty well with the story.
I’ve spent a lot of time trying to improve my records in Mercenaries Mode; it turns out it is pretty difficult to achieve a score higher than 1,500,000 points, but I keep trying. I play better with Ada, so my best results are with her—it’s so fucking fun.
I think Capcom achieved something very hard to accomplish here. The gameplay of this game is surreal, and they definitely should keep some mechanics for the new game, Resident Evil 9. It’s very fun to play and better than the previous remakes for sure.
Art Aspect
The game looks beautiful, everything looks amazing, and the best part is that it runs well without demanding insane hardware to play. My PC is not top-tier and it runs perfectly on high settings—smoothly and beautifully.
The choice to keep things similar to the original as much as possible really makes this game stand out. They had no fear of keeping things. The things that were removed are the garbanzo U-3 boss and the robot Salazar that always made me wonder, “who the fuck does that?”. The only character that looked bad in my opinion is Salazar; he just looks weird and doesn’t give the same vibe as the original. Saddler looks cool, but he could be better as well.
Sound and Music
When it comes to music and sound design, this game also nailed it. Some tracks are insanely good and fit the atmosphere perfectly.
The sound of weapons, explosions, environment, etc.—pretty cool. This department always nailed it.
Remake vs Original
I think that this game is a great product, the best remake so far, and playing it only makes you angrier about how Resident Evil 3 Remake was released. The content and everything you need is there. If you want to play Resident Evil 4, you can start with the remake, no problem.
Gameplay-wise, the remake is way better than the original. I could see someone choosing the remake over the OG with no problem. The remake really respects the original and is a gift for the fans.
Personal Reflections
I played a lot of Mercenaries Mode, and it took me a while to engage with the story mode. The gameplay is so good to me that I could spend hours playing and dismembering Ganados just for fun.
I think this is the game that I played the most this past year—insane. I wasn’t playing anything, then I got completely invested in this.
Mods and Replayability
As mentioned before, the game has great combat and the gameplay is very well made. Mods are pretty cool and can expand the lifespan of the game—a lot of replayability. There are mods for skins, game balance changes, randomizers, and so on. Each one can be used for a different playthrough.
Recommendation
I really recommend that you play this game even if you didn’t play the original. It is a great experience and worth your time. I’ve given this game a score of 9.5 because it is hard to imagine something better than this. It makes me more excited for Resident Evil 9, which some leaks confirm will have Leon as protagonist.
Play the game!
